CBSE move of little help: Students

Filed under:

There may be just a week left before the CBSE exams start, but the board feels model answer sheets can still help students. It has therefore put up answer sheets from last year for the Maths and English Communicative papers on its website. What seems to have slipped CBSEs notice however is the fact that one of the answer sheets put up, is from an outdated syllabus and the other only opted for by public schools.

Adding to the irony is the fact that not many students seem to know about the answer sheets being put up on the site. Said Arjun Mehra, a Class X student, I had read that the answer sheets would be put up but didnt know the board had done so. Neither do my friends know about it. Teachers seem to be equally clueless.

Said Sunita Dang, teaching at Hillwoods Academy, I have no knowledge of the answer sheets being made available on the site.

For those few students who do know about the boards move, the fact that the Maths answer sheet is from last years syllabus has meant that the paper is of almost no use. Students say this years syllabus is quite different, with even the marking system having changed.

Said Ashwini Sharma, another student, I saw the paper on CBSEs site but its not really like the paper we will sit for. Chapters now have different weightage and the questions (in the past years paper) are a lot easier than the ones in the CBSE sample paper. Sharma is instead concentrating on the sample papers already recommended by her school.

Meanwhile, government schools are complaining that the CBSE seems to have thought about only the public schools by providing the English Communicative answer sheet. Most government schools opt for the English Core paper.

Om Kapoor, teaching in a government school in east Delhi said, The English Communicative paper is usually only given by public schools. Even the NCERT does not come out with a textbook on the subject. It only has books for English Core, which is what government schools opt for.

Teachers point out that with the exams only a week away, CBSEs move is a bit late. CBSE however, doesnt believe so. A CBSE senior official said, The model answer sheet basically provides a blueprint for the student on how to answer the question. It gives pointers on how to present the answer rather than just what to answer.

Move to sanction unaided CBSE schools flayed

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad (KSSP) has flayed the State Government decision to sanction unaided CBSE schools in educationally backward areas. KSSP president T.P. Kunhikannan and general secretary C.M. Muraleedharan said here on Tuesday that the order issued by the General Education Department created the impression that CBSE schools were better equipped than the school curriculum in Kerala to remove the backwardness of the northern districts where the proposal was to be implemented first. This, they said, was a flawed approach to the problem. The Parishad leaders said the Government move would undermine the general education sector in Kerala and
