Balasubramanian, who started his career as a teacher in Kendriya Vidyalaya (Tiruchi), went on to become Principal of the Hindu Senior Secondary School (Triplicane, Chennai). The veteran academician retired as CBSE director in February.
What our country needs is a synergy between textbooks and pedagogy, he says.
Education is an empowering process and a student has to be facilitated to learn at his or her pace and according to ones aptitude.
The primary level education has to enable holistic development of basic life skills and nurture multiple intelligences so that students interact with society meaningfully. Learning process at higher levels of education should focus on competency and developing various skills, he says.
The concept of failure needs to be abolished at the primary level and focus should be on pursuit of excellence than success. In this context, the role of marks is incidental. But as the child grows to face the Board examination, the need for a filtering mechanism arises due to paucity of seats, giving cut off marks undue importance, he says, adding that exposing parents and students to different avenues and opportunities would enhance the scope for enterprise in children.

Govt has a special plan for the special children
Delhi is all set to be a special city, literally. In a pilot project, the Delhi government is going to start 22 schools two per district entirely devoted to special children, teaching unusual, CBSE-recommended subjects like home science to boys, music and art.
The government is currently involved in training one teacher per school as a special educator, who will help detect special children and take care of their needs. New training course for teachers begins
Training for the first batch of Central Board of Secondary Education teachers for a new course on Financial Markets Management was inaugurated here on Monday.
Forty teachers from 25 schools of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Chandigarh are participating in the training programme at the BLB Institute of Financial Markets (BIFM) campus. The training ends on Saturday.
BIFM is the authorised partner of CBSE for training its teachers and will coach them in implementation requirements of the new course like faculty theory, practical trainers, stock market trading and software.
